It is, of course, an obvious comparison, but the 2016 Arc was always set to face the same problems that will trouble Bake Off in 2017 and beyond. When you relocate from your traditional home it can be extremely hard to replicate the usual magic.

Whereas the Bake Off must in future survive without Mary, Mel and Sue, the Arc has been parted from Longchamp, if only for a couple of years. It has, however, gained a lovely temporary base at Chantilly, a racecourse blessed with a gorgeous backdrop that features palatial stables and a chateau. The difference between the two is their size.

The gargantuan Longchamp grandstands, prior to being bulldozed, seemed to continue from one end of the home straight to the other. They had the capacity to hold vastly more people than the structure at the more bijou, almost quaint, Chantilly, where on the biggest day in its history the queues are long, walkways at times cramped and decent vantage points not that easy to find.
