Fahey sends Kimberella on international mission for Group 3 bid
Preview: Sweden, Sunday 3.37pm
Jagersro: Zawawi Cup (Group 3) | 6f | dirt | 3yo+
Richard Fahey is hoping an adventurous policy with Kimberella can pay rich dividends when the seven-year-old tackles the Group 3 Zawawi Cup at Jagersro in Sweden on Sunday.
Kimberella is set to face 14 rivals in the 6f contest, but boasts some rock-solid Group 3 and top-flight British handicap form and is likely to start favourite.
“The race is on dirt, so it’s a different surface to what he’s used to,” Fahey said on Saturday.
“There are no easy options for him in Britain off his mark of 109 so I thought we’d try this race. Fair play to the owner [Clive Titcomb] for letting me send the horse all that way.
“It looks an easier option for Kimberella. He is clear top on ratings, will be sent off favourite and stall four is a good draw for him – you want to be low out there.
“He has travelled over and everything has gone well. Let’s hope it all works out.”
Kevin Stott, who was born just outside Copenhagen in Denmark, regularly makes trips back to Scandinavia from his Hambleton base, where he works for Kevin Ryan, and has seven rides on the ten-race card which also features the Swedish Derby.
Stott, who landed the Zawawi Cup 12 months ago, said on Saturday: "As well as winning the Group 3 out there last year, I was also third in the Swedish Derby.
"I have a great chance tomorrow with Gunvald in the Group 3 and in the Derby with a horse called Sasha Waltz, who ran in the UAE 1,000 Guineas.
“It's a small track, it's dirt and everything is about pace – like America – but I am looking forward to going again."
