Eight-year ban for jockey who placed bets and competed under false name

A jockey has been suspended for eight years for betting on races while also competing under a false name.

Daniel Jack Smith bet in races he was involved with and also horses he partnered in them when riding under his birth name of Terry Treichel, which he had legally changed, as well as betting in races he was not connected to.

Smith pleaded guilty to 32 charges from stewards, including 27 breaches of betting on any race he was involved with between July 2019 and December 2020, risking a total of A$1,840 (£1,031/€1,185).

He also pleaded guilty to betting on other races he was not involved in between April 2019 and July 2020 with 168 bets placed for a total of A$10,500 (£5,881/€6,762).

"This is a unique set of circumstances not seen before in Australian racing," the stewards' report read. "The covering of a change of identity and subsequent volume of betting whilst licensed as a jockey is unprecedented."

Smith was banned for eight years for the betting offences and three years for false declarations, with the rider serving them concurrently. The ban started on December 18, 2020, the day his licence was suspended.
