Deauville raid pays off as Owen strikes gold to win for Simcock
Michael Owen may have come up short on his race-riding debut at Ascot last month but Qatar Racing's five-year-old Mr Owen gained a first win for trainer David Simcock in the Listed Prix Luthier at Deauville on Saturday.
Having won two Listed races for his previous trainer Francis Rohaut, Mr Owen returned to France and was sent off 17-10 favourite for the 7½f contest after finishing a decent third to Second Thought in the Listed Hyde Stakes at Kempton on his previous start.
Mr Owen was settled behind the leaders in the early stages before Christophe Soumillon asked the son of Invincible Spirit to assert in the closing stages and score by a cosy length and three-quarters.
The Harry Dunlop-trained Early Morning finished in third at 32-1, with David Elsworth's Speculative Bid in sixth.
