Coltish Corinthia Knight spoils chance as Long On Value proves worth

There was no joy for Lambourn raider Corinthia Knight asLong On Value (Brad Cox/Florent Geroux) captured this Grade 1 prize.

Trained by Archie Watson and ridden by Luke Morris, Corinthia Knight was prominent but weakened in the closing two furlongs to finish last of nine.

Race result

Watson felt the three-year-old was too coltish in the preliminaries and his race was over before the event, run as a top-level heat for the first time this year.

For trainer Cox, it was a second successive Highlander strike after Green Mask did the business 12 months ago.

Long On Value, who won by a neck from Lady Alexandra with Holding Gold third, has now earned a place in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, but as he is by Value Plus – a stallion not nominated for that particular meeting, deeming him ineligible – connections will have to supplement him for $100,000.

Chad Brown, the leading turf trainer in the States, ran four in this New Jersey contest, so it was unsurprising he had the winner with Funtastic (Antonio Gallardo) leading home stablebate Money Multiplier.

Race result

It was a first Grade 1 victory for Funtastic, a son of More Than Ready, whose rider was also capturing his first top-flight success.

"It means so much," he said. "I've won Grade 2 and Grade 3 races. Now I can say I've won a Grade 1."
