Classy Cairn Gorm makes it three from three for Channon and Marquand

Cairn Gorm produced a fine display to extend his unbeaten record to three in the Group 3 Darley Prix de Cabourg at Deauville and looks a type who could take Mick Channon's team in search of major two-year-old prizes before the season is out.

His performance was all the more noteworthy as plan A had to be quickly discarded when fellow British raider Mighty Gurkha dwelt in the stalls.

"Unfortunately Archie Watson's horse didn't jump out of the stalls and he was our pace angle," said assistant trainer Jack Channon. "It really hasn't suited him because they crawled and he's done really well to win. He would have much preferred a good pace. But he's a nice horse with a nice turn of foot so onwards and upwards.

"He's got bundles of class and it was his class that got him out of trouble last time at Newbury as well."

Last year the Cabourg winner Earthlight went on to win a pair of Group 1 prizes in the Prix Morny and the Middle Park.

Cairn Gorm handled the steep rise in class in his stride and Channon believes there is more to come from the well-furnished son of Bated Breath.

"We could look at coming back here in a couple of weeks time for the Morny, or there’s the Gimcrack at York," said Channon. "There's also the Mill Reef back at Newbury if we wanted to give him a bit of a longer break."

The only maiden in the field, Jubilation added to her collection of seconds under Oisin Murphy, a result which pleased trainer Eoghan O'Neill.

"She's a lovely filly and she's progressing," said O'Neill. "She's a good strong body and Oisin said it was a messy race from where we were drawn because they all came back on top of her.

"She's done really well and we're delighted."
