The Frankie Lor-trained Furore sat close to a slow pace and was launched into the lead in the Sha Tin straight by Hugh Bowman to win the BMW Hong Kong Derby on Sunday.

Having already won the first leg of the four-year-old series in the Classic Mile back in January, Furore added the Derby to his CV, beating the favourite Waikuku and Sunny Speed, formerly known as Crack On Crack On when trained in Britain.

Classic Cup winner Mission Tycoon and Ka Ying Star set the pace as anticipated, but neither set the stopwatch alight, with Dark Dream unable to slot in and Waikuku – formerly trained in Ireland by John Oxx – left with a lot to do under Joao Moreira.

Bowman was in the perfect position turning in, and Winx's rider soon had his second Derby in the bag after scoring in 2016 with Werther for John Moore.

"I didn't disappoint him, the other day I rode a negative race from a wide draw [in the Classic Cup] and it didn't go well so I changed tactics today," the rider said.

He added: "I'm just so pleased for the team."

British-based jockeys did not endure much luck in the race, with Oisin Murphy (Gold Chest), Ryan Moore (Enrichment) and Silvestre de Sousa (Harmony Victory) all failing to get involved.
