Chad Brown celebrated his third victory in the Wonder Again Stakes at Belmont when Cambier Parc upset the odds to finish clear of her more accomplished stablemate Newspaperofrecord.

Making her second appearance since landing the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf in November, Newspaperofrecord led for much of the contest but was tracked all the way by Cambier Parc, who was delivered on the straight by Jose Ortiz to win by a length and a half.

It was a second graded victory of the season for the OXO Equine-owned filly, who was last seen finishing fourth in the Edgewood Stakes on good ground at Churchill Downs.

"I'm not surprised Cambier Parc ran this well. That's why we had her in the race," Brown said. "She's a far better horse on firm ground. That race at Churchill Downs really didn't do her any justice."

Newspaperofrecord, sent off an odds-on favourite, had to settle for runner-up for the second time this season, having won all three starts as a juvenile.

Jockey Irad Ortiz thought the daughter of Lope De Vega ran well but believes the front-running filly may now need an early target.

"If we go on to the Belmont Oaks with a bigger field, I'd like to see how she responds with someone to follow a little deeper into the stretch. I just wonder if she's getting a little lost when she's so alone, like when she kicked clear in the stretch in her last two races," Brown said.

"As a three-year-old against lightly raced horses that aren't as good as her, they are not going to catch her. She's just got run down two times by really good horses and opening up a big lead in the stretch might not be the logical thing for her anymore."
