Jockey of the moment Oisin Murphy has been booked to ride the Ed Dunlop-trained Red Verdon in the Melbourne Cup.

Red Verdon, who finished second to Crystal Ocean in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot in the summer, is a general 33-1 shot for the November 6 Flemington highlight.

Murphy is enjoying a phenomenal season, with notable victories on Roaring Lion and Lightning Spear, both of whom he will be in line to ride at the Breeders' Cup the weekend before the Melbourne Cup.

"I've ridden Red Verdon a couple of times and was on him when he won well in a conditions race at Lingfield in February, which was a prep for the Marathon on All-Weather Finals Day," said Murphy.

"He's a lovely horse who stays and has pace, so he's the right type for the race. I just need to organise my transport, as I'll be at the Breeders' Cup the weekend before, but others are doing the same trip so it should be okay."
