McEvoy called up to replace Moore on Red Cardinal in Melbourne Cup
Kerrin McEvoy has been booked to ride Red Cardinal in the Emirates Melbourne Cup at Flemington on November 7, replacing Ryan Moore.
Moore had been pencilled in to ride the Andreas Wohler-trained colt, who at around 14-1 with British and Irish bookmakers is prominent in the market, but connections have turned to McEvoy due to logistical issues arising from a clash with the Breeders' Cup at Del Mar in California the previous weekend.
Moore rode Protectionist to win the 2014 Melbourne Cup for Wohler and owners Australian Bloodstock but Australian Bloodstock's Jamie Lovett, quoted on racing.com, said: "Logistically it was just going to be too hard getting him [Moore] out of there. Kerrin didn't have a ride lined up so it made sense.
"I'll talk to Kerrin in the morning and Andreas will liaise with him as to when the best time to get out there [Werribee International Horse Centre] would be, but I'd think he would give him a spin beforehand."
He added: "We're very happy with him and we are very comfortable with the decision not to run him at Caulfield."
McEvoy will be seeking back-to-back victories in the 'race that stops a nation' having partnered Almandin 12 months ago, while he also won the race in 2000 on Brew.
The Melbourne Cup market is headed by the Hughie Morrison-trained Marmelo at a best-priced 6-1.
