Five from 11: Glorious Journey adds to Appleby's summer haul at Deauville

When Beyond Reason scored on the first day of Deauville's month-long summer jamboree, Charlie Appleby pointed out to reporters that she was his first winner in France of the year.

Little more than three weeks later Glorious Journey and William Buick clocked up a fifth winner from just 11 runners at the meeting for the Moulton Paddocks team, making all to readily hold off the challenge of Sacred Life in the Group 3 Prix Daphins.

Appleby said: "I'm pleased to get him back on track because he won a Group 3 at Saint-Cloud last year and we were hopeful he was going to be a horse that progressed throughout the season."

"But mentally he has been a bit more challenging than we had hoped. He has the ability and it's a case of channelling it. He learnt a lot on that last experience at Goodwood.

"We haven't got any plans for him but this looks to be his trip and he might be a horse that would enjoy himself in Dubai."

Appleby was also responsible for third placed First Contact and may not have finished with his Deauville winning ways, as he plans to bring three more horses over on Sunday for the final Group races of the meeting.

Stephane Wattel accepted that the quick turn around for Sacred Life was a gamble that had not entirely worked, though he was pleased enough with the son of Siyouni's effort on ground significantly quicker than he encountered here 12 days ago.

"This was the last mile race restricted to three year-olds which is why I tried again and, though I'm relatively satisfied, you could see that, when the race started in earnest, he was a little slow to react before finishing well," said Wattel.

"Hopefully softer ground might make that little bit of difference later in the year."
