Appleby and Head finish with a flourish as Loxley and Tantheem triumph

Loxley rounded off a brilliant month in Normandy for Charlie Appleby when holding off Way To Paris and Salouen in the Group 2 Lucien Barriere Grand Prix de Deauville.

It was the three-year-old's second win of the month-long meeting and a seventh for Appleby from just 15 runners.

"I was very pleased with his win in the Listed race here and we felt this mile and a half would suit him," said Appleby. "He's a big scopey horse and next year will be his year, while I wouldn't be a fan of coming back to a mile and a quarter."

Loxley is not entered in the Arc but is available at 25-1 with William Hill on the back of what was an improved performance.

Salouen led until halfway up the straight but, conceding 9lb weight for age, was unable to go with Loxley, who was ridden by William Buick, in the final furlong.

"He's run well again but it's about time we won a race with him," said trainer Sylvester Kirk. "He's got some invites but it would be nice to win a race and then go off somewhere."

Appleby might have further improved his Deauville statistics but for the last-ditch lunge of Graphite, who denied Buick and Salsabeel by a short head in the Prix Quincey Barriere.

Reflecting on the success of the Moulton Paddocks team selected for Deauville this summer, Appleby said: "As the years go on you get more experience of which horses suit which tracks and the style of racing, so we pinpointed a team to come here. It's been a great few weeks and, more importantly, very successful."

Undoubtedly the revelation of the day came in the Group 3 Prix de Meautry Barriere, in which Tantheem ran away from a talented field of sprinters for another in-form trainer in Freddy Head.

Not seen since the Prix d'Imprudence in April, Hamdan Al Maktoum's homebred filly doesn't hold any fancy entries but looks a serious sprinter.

"She has a lot of speed and won the Prix du Cabourg in similar fashion last year," said Head. "After that she was sick but she was always among my best two-year-olds."

That statement in itself should give pause for thought, given Head has won Group 1s at this meeting with Tantheem's stablemates With You and Polydream.
