All Weather Sprint champion Kimberella tailed off in Zawawi Cup
All-Weather Sprint Championship winner Kimberella finished tailed off when a hot favourite for the Group 3 Zawawi Cup at Jagersro on Sunday.
The seven-year-old landed his first two starts on Polytrack for Richard Fahey in the spring and had run well in defeat since, but he ran no sort of race on the Swedish track's dirt surface, ridden by local rider Oliver Wilson in place of Paul Hanagan.
Fahey said: "It just didn't happen. I watched it on a live stream and he was beat after 100 yards and must have finished half a furlong behind.
"The track was very deep and there was a lot of kickback, but whether it was that, or the travelling, or something else, we will be thinking very carefully before we make the trip again."
The six-furlong contest, whose sponsor Dr Omar Zawawi enjoyed a clutch of Royal Ascot winners in the 1980s and early 1990s, including the 1982 Queen Alexandra with the Willie Musson-trained Ore, went to the Danish-bred Land's End. Kevin Stott, who had a busy afternoon, was third on Gunvald.
