'I'm not sure a slog in the mud would suit St Mark's Basilica in the Arc'

Our experts on how they see the Arc picture after an informative weekend

St Mark's Basilica: ready winner of the Prix du Jockey Club

'I'd rather back two at bigger prices'

Snowfall certainly deserves her place at the top of the Arc betting after her scintillating Oaks win. Odds of around 5-1 seem fair considering only Enable registered the same Racing Post Rating of 123 when winning that Classic – it may be in a few months that price looks a steal. She appears the most likely winner considering she's handled cut in the ground well and will be in receipt of loads of weight.

A lot can change though so I'd rather back two at bigger prices. I thought Japanese mare Chrono Genesis ran a great race in the Dubai Sheema Classic. She's won on yielding ground and is overpriced at 20-1 considering she's shown a high level of form. I'd also fancy High Definition to develop this season and it could be he is at his best on easier ground. He was an ante-post Derby favourite for a reason, remember.

'Snowfall looks a very worthy favourite'

With all due respect to Adayar, who has scope to improve through the year, Snowfall already looks a worthy favourite for the Arc. Neither of the Epsom winners are in the race but with Love a confirmed top-of-the-ground horse, Snowfall looks the perfect foil if there is any juice in the going description come October.

Love: leading Arc contender

St Mark's Basilica has so much speed that it would seem counter-intuitive to be stepping him up at this stage. Of the home challengers, Millebosc ran a huge race in third at Chantilly on Sunday and looks one to keep onside in the autumn, while In Swoop and the three-year-old Fenelon could also figure.

'St Mark's Basilica is all about speed'

It's looking all about the fillies at present. Aidan O'Brien now has two with Snowfall joining Love as a stellar contender following her Oaks romp. You also have the Aga Khan pair of Tarnawa and Ebaiyra, and last year's Arc fifth Raabihah looks a bit overpriced with one firm offering 33-1. She'll improve for better ground.

St Mark's Basilica was impressive at Chantilly on Sunday, but the performance was all about speed and I'm not sure a slog in the mud at Longchamp in October would really be his thing. There'll be plenty of opportunities for him short of a mile and a half.
