'I owe him so much' - Sam Twiston-Davies pays tribute to stable star The New One
Sam Twiston-Davies described The New One as "the horse of dreams" after the retired top-class hurdler died from a bout of colic on Saturday.
The rider enjoyed some of his finest days in the saddle on The New One, whose brilliant career yielded more than £1 million in prize-money for trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies and owners Gino Paletta and Simon Such.
Twiston-Davies said: "To sum up what he meant to me and a lot of people will always be incredibly hard. What he did for our yard, for myself, for Wayne Jones [groom] – he was the horse of dreams.
"We'll miss him forever but we'll always treasure the wonderful memories."
The New One's superb CV featured two Grade 1 victories in the 2013 Neptune Investment Novices' Hurdle and 2014 Aintree Hurdle.
Below the top tier, The New One landed three International Hurdles at Cheltenham and four Haydock Park Champion Hurdle Trials.

The impeccable consistency of the son of King's Theatre at Graded level was reinforced by the impressive achievement of running to a Racing Post Rating of at least 160 17 times in his 36 starts over hurdles.
When asked to nominate a standout moment, Twiston-Davies said: "The trouble with The New One is there were so many highlights. Every season he turned up and won a big race.
"You always remember Cheltenham Festivals and I'll always remember the Neptune, which was a brilliant day, while his Grade 1 win at Aintree was incredibly special.
"He allowed me the chance to ride in Champion Hurdles and do things I could only have dreamed of as a kid. I owe him so much."
