Big-money Journey makes winning start for in-form Godolphin

Glorious Journey (left) gets the better of Grand Koonta to make a winning debut
1 of 1

You get what you pay for, sometimes.

But Glorious Journey went some way to showing the 2.6 million guineas ex-Godolphin chief executive John Ferguson shelled out for him at a prestigious Tattersalls yearling sale in Newmarket last October might not prove money wasted when he made a winning debut at Newmarket on Saturday.

It was the first of three victories for trainer Charlie Appleby, with John Gosden also weighing in to give Godolphin the first four winners on the card.

Bred by Normandie Stud out of its Coronation Stakes winner Fallen For You, the son of Dubawi had Ferguson purring at the sale. He said: "The situation with this colt is that he's the second foal out of a Coronation Stakes winner and he's a wonderfully balanced, athletic horse; one of the best Dubawis here, top of the range. So he was a horse that was always going to make a lot of money."

Glorious Journey duly proved too good for his eight rivals in division one of Newmarket's novice.

Trained by Charlie Appleby, who had said beforehand his pricey runner was not one for Royal Ascot, the juvenile took a keen hold, tracked the leaders and ran on well to beat Grand Koonta at evens.

William Buick, who did the steering, said: "You couldn't have asked for any more first time out. He's a nice horse for the future and stuck to his task well considering we hacked and then sprinted. Hopefully there is more to come."

Glorious Journey was among the top five most expensive yearlings sold in Europe last year. Here is the lowdown on the other four

Emaraaty 2,600,000gns
Bought for the same amount as Glorious Journey by Hamdan Al Maktoum's Shadwell operation at the same sale two days later, this John Gosden-trained colt is also by Dubawi and out of Zee Zee Top.

Hence 2,100,000gns
Chestnut filly, by the brilliant Galileo, is a sister to three-time Group 1 winner Alice Springs who caught the eye of MV Magnier/Mayfair/P&R Doyle at the sales.

Ghostwatch 2,100,000gns
Another Dubawi who impressed John Ferguson last year, this colt will be trained by Charlie Appleby and, like Glorious Journey, runs in the Godolphin blue.

Elarqam 1,600,000gns
Hamdan Al Maktoum will also be able to look forward to this Mark Johnston inmate who is by two-time world champion Frankel out of the trainer's 1,000 Guineas heroine Attraction.
