Dream Of Dreams ended a long wait for a first Group winner with an emphatic victory in the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes at Newbury.

The six-year-old, who finished second in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, made his 16th attempt at Group level a winning one when bounding seven lengths clear of Breathtaking Look.

It was a poignant success for Sir Michael Stoute, whose team were mourning the death of his partner Coral Pritchard-Gordon this week.

"He's always threatened to win a big one and I'm just delighted for everyone at home," said assistant trainer James Horton.

"He's versatile over six or seven furlongs and he just needs a good pace to run at. We'll talk to connections about future plans for him.

"That will mean a lot to everyone at the yard. It's a very sad time at Freemason as Coral was a rock for everyone, the boss more than anyone. It's been a tough week and this is a poignant winner."

Dream Of Dreams was slashed to 5-1 from 10-1 for the Sprint Cup at Haydock on September 5 after giving Stoute his fourth success in the race, 39 years after he first struck with Dalsaan in 1981.

Hukum advertises Leger credentials

Hukum earned quotes of 10-1 for the St Leger on September 12 after landing the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury.

The three-year-old took stepping up to Group company in his stride with a four-and-a-half-length victory over 6-1 shot Max Vega under Jim Crowley for in-form owner Sheikh Hamdan.

Hukum won the King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot and his trainer Owen Burrows believes there is more improvement to come.

"Jim said he didn't think they went very quick and did mention he thought Hukum might be a bit better going a bit quicker. He was impressive. He'd never ran on soft ground, so until they've run on it you're a little worried, but he's handled it fine," said Burrows.

"He's strengthening as the year goes on and is very exciting. The St Leger will be spoken about, but this horse has got a bit of speed and I don't think we're talking about a Cup horse [long term]."
