Howzat? Your chance to name Sussex cricketer Will Beer's new bat
Inspired by legendary cricketer Brendon McCullum, Sussex spinner Will Beer has started naming his cricket bats after famous racehorses, and he wants some inspiration from Racing Post readers for his latest Newbery blade.
Earlier this year during a live Big Bash game, New Zealander McCullum revealed he had named his bat Winx, in tribute to the Aussie wondermare, which prompted Beer and teammate Phil Salt to start saluting their racing heroes.
Beer smashed 78 for the Sussex second XI on Wednesday with a bat named after dual King George VI Chase hero Silviniaco Conti, and he also has ones called Blaklion and Min.
Explaining his interest in racing, Beer, who has made over 100 T20 appearances for Sussex, said: "My mum and dad used to go – they're into jumps racing – so from an early age I went with them. From going fairly regularly I got into it, and I've got a mathematical brain so I quite liked the idea of working out the odds.
"Lots of my friends are into racing – one of my best friends works for Ed Dunlop – so I'm always talking about racing. It's a hobby away from cricket."
The 29-year-old added: "I like Flat racing but I'm more into my jumps. We're pretty busy in the summer with the cricket season so it's easier to keep tabs on it in the winter.
"We've got lots of local courses down Sussex way, with Fontwell, Plumpton and Lingfield nearby, so there's plenty to go and watch."
Have a great name for Beer's bat? Email your suggestions to firstname.lastname@example.org or comment on Twitter or Facebook. The best will be included in a poll on Saturday, with the bat named after the vote winner.
