Hollie Doyle rides: can star jockey repeat her Windsor heroics of last year?
It would be wrong to say Hollie Doyle emerged when riding a magical five-timer on Windsor's card on Saturday 12 months ago, but it was an afternoon she will forever look back on fondly, even if the celebrations made few ripples.
"I've got Yarmouth tomorrow," the down-to-earth Doyle replied when asked how she would mark her 899-1 nap hand, which was the first time a female jockey had ridden five winners at a meeting in Britain.
The diminutive Doyle might have sought to play down her achievements, but it merited a mention on the BBC1 news that night and proved the perfect platform for a fruitful autumn, which included a memorable Champions Day double on Trueshan and Glen Shiel, whose Group 1 Sprint triumph was the likeable 24-year-old's first at the highest level.
She ended the year with an impressive 151 winners – beating her previous annual record of 116 from 2019, which was also more than any other female rider in Britain had managed – and December yielded a fine third behind Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
Doyle may not be on a par with Rachael Blackmore in terms of profile in the wider world and talk of a title challenge this season has stalled, but she kept her bank manager happy by landing a £729,000 conditions race on the Willie Mullins-trained True Self in Saudi Arabia in February – her most lucrative win – and equalled her Windsor exploits when dazzling with a 2,521-1 Kempton five-timer a month later.
Among the most popular members of the weighing room when it comes to selfies and autographs – and seemingly always happy to oblige – Doyle doubled her tally of Group 1 victories when steering Trueshan to success in the Goodwood Cup last month and has already recorded another century of winners this year.
It has been a splendid 12 months and she is back at Windsor's best fixture with a near-full book of rides, including Extra Elusive in the Listed Sytner BMW Sunningdale & Maidenhead August Stakes ().
Extra Elusive won the Group 3 Sytner BMW Sunningdale & Maidenhead Winter Hill Stakes () on the card last year and should have major claims up in trip and down in class, while Twilight Madness, on whom Doyle had won twice before her partner Tom Marquand got the leg up last time, appears her best ride of the day in the 6f handicap ().
But just like last year, it's unlikely a party has been planned in anticipation of another fantastic five-timer. She's at Goodwood on Sunday, after all.
