History on Lancelot Du Lac's side as he bids for second Stewards' Cup
Lancelot Du Lac, who broke from stall 15 when giving connections a memorable day in last year's Stewards' Cup, will have history on his side in Saturday's Unibet-backed renewal as he will race from the same spot.
The draw for one of Britain's premier sprint handicaps took place at Goodwood on Thursday, when it seemed many associated with the 28-runner field wanted to be drawn high.
Worth £250,000, the Qatar Stewards' Cup is among a handful of races in the British calendar that allow connections to pick a berth following the draw.
That was made by former champion jockey Richard Hughes, whose four victories in the race make him its most successful rider in modern times.
Up 1lb from his success 12 months ago, the Dean Ivory-trained Lancelot De Lac will break in between Haddaf (14) and Open Wide, whose trainer Amanda Perrett chose 16 and said: "We wanted to be in the middle and it's our lucky number."
Foxtrot Lady, who had been prominent in the ante-post betting for the famous handicap sprint, is in gate nine, while Pettochside was placed in stall one. His trainer John Bridger was not on hand during the draw and time ran out before he could be located and pick his number.
Like Foxtrot Lady, Wokingham winner Bacchus had been among the leading fancies for the Stewards' Cup, but he was not declared by trainer Brian Meehan. Bacchus is entered in the Group 1 Larc Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville on Sunday, final declarations for which are on Friday.
Only four were declared for Saturday's Group 3 Qatar Gordon Stakes at Goodwood - Dee Ex Bee, Bombyx, Cross Counter and Sun Maiden.
