'He's been going very, very well' - Mohaather impressing before Queen Anne tilt
Marcus Tregoning is relishing a campaign tailored around the top races for stable flagbearer Mohaather, who has been impressing his trainer in his work on the gallops.
The four-year-old son of Showcasing exploded on the scene with an impressive win in the Greenham Stakes last season before suffering an injury before the 2,000 Guineas. He later returned in October to finish a promising fifth in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day.
Mohaather is now being primed for the Queen Anne Stakes at the royal meeting, for which he is a top-priced 16-1 chance, but Tregoning is also tempted to go sprinting with him.
"He's in really good form," said Tregoning, speaking after Dartington's win at Lingfield on Saturday. "I wasn't too sure how straight my horses were, but now we've had a winner it makes it a bit better. The ground has been a bit firm so we've had to be quite mindful with him and with his injury.
"Jim Crowley has been in and they've done some nice pieces of work. He's been going very, very well and I'd like to think wherever he goes he will run extremely well."
On his Royal Ascot target, he added: "I think a lot of it will be about the ground. He's got loads of speed and going sprinting could always be the end plan, but I think we'll most likely start in the Queen Anne."
Mohaather's Greenham Stakes win has worked out strongly with fourth-placed Hello Youmzain going on to win the Sprint Cup, while runner-up Great Scot has won at Group 3 level.
The Whitsbury Manor Stables trainer said: "His form looks good but there's some good milers around. I've always had in the back of my mind that the sprinting division is a little bit weaker. But we'll see if he's good enough for those top races, I think he's pretty good.
"He appears to get the mile okay but sometimes those sort of horses are even better when you drop back in trip."
