Hero's return: Frankie Dettori back at Deauville on Saturday for Group-race trio
Frankie Dettori swings back into action at Deauville on Saturday for rides in three Shadwell-sponsored Group races, having stayed in France owing to quarantine regulations since his big-race double at the track last weekend on Mishriff and Palace Pier.
Dettori will ride the progressive Auyantepui for Mario Baratti in the Group 2 Prix de la Nonette (1.35), King’s Command for Charlie Appleby in the Group 3 Prix Daphnis (2.50) and No Speak Alexander for Jessica Harrington in the Group 2 Prix Du Calvados (3.25).
Appleby runs two in the Daphnis and said: "King’s Command won a Group 3 on soft ground in France last year and his preparation has gone well. He will love conditions and we feel that the step up to a mile will help as well.
"Well Of Wisdom was successful over this course and distance last time out and Mickael Barzalona knows the horse well, having won on him twice. The ground is going to be soft, which is going to be a bit more of a challenge, but he's well and goes into the race with a live chance."
Roger Varian and William Haggas are also represented in the Daphnis, with Varian keen to get his impressive Newbury winner Lord Campari back on track after a below-par run when hot favourite at Newmarket’s July meeting.
"Lord Campari ran too free at Newmarket last time, showing his inexperience I suppose, but he’s a very talented horse and I’m hoping he can re-establish himself here," said Varian.
The Haggas representative Tammani races for Prince Faisal, owner of Mishriff, and he was held in similar high regard last winter.
Prince Faisal’s racing manager Ted Voute said: "He was neck and neck with Mishriff going into the winter and what we thought might happen this year, but he’s been delayed with a couple of niggly little hold-ups. The chiropractor has sorted him out now and he’s had a clear run at it.
"We are first time out, but he was third to Pyledriver at Haydock last year and him winning the other day gave me a bit more confidence. We're in the Moulin afterwards and we’ve given him some smart entries just in case he does win quite nicely. We are hopeful."
No Speak Alexander should not mind the forecast very soft ground in the Calvados, having easily won a Roscommon maiden in heavy going, but she faces some tough opponents, including the Richard Fahey-trained Fev Rover, a 7f Listed winner at Sandown last time for whom Christophe Soumillon is booked.
Harrington said: "We thought she was a nice filly all along and she was very good at Roscommon. Hopefully, the ground will be suitable for her."
