Nicky Henderson is hoping to leave a nightmare start to the new year behind him and had better news on Thursday when revealing Champ had escaped serious injury after crashing out at Cheltenham on the first day of 2020.

A dual Grade 1 winner as a novice hurdler last season, Champ started the new year unbeaten over fences and as favourite for the RSA Chase but took a crashing fall two fences from home when well in command of the Grade 2 Dipper Novices’ Chase.

It summed up Henderson’s start to the year, with all nine runners fielded by the Lambourn trainer at Cheltenham on Wednesday failing to get on the scoresheet.
