Hedley defends watering of track as unexpected rain leads to going change
Nottingham clerk of the course Jane Hedley defended her decision to water the track on Tuesday, as unexpected heavy rain on Wednesday morning led to the ground turning soft from an original description of good, good to firm in places.
The marked change in conditions led to a swathe of non-runners, with 13 of the 15 absentees scratched because of the ground.
Speaking before racing, Hedley said on Wednesday: "The forecast was that we had a 40 per cent chance of a shower around midday today.
"We watered the bends with three to five millimetres yesterday as it was lush grass and it would have been slippery if that had come but that was all the watering we did.
"At 6am this morning I rang John Kettley and he said that it was unlikely we would get any rain, and then it came, 13mm of it."
