Hanlon fined and Dame disqualified after positive test
Trainer unable to explain 'high levels' of the medication in mare's system
Trainer John 'Shark' Hanlon has been fined €1,500 and his mare Diamond Dame disqualified from her win at Listowel by a Turf Club referrals committee after the seven-year-old tested positive for Lasix following her 25-1 victory.
An official report on the referral has yet to be published, but Turf Club chief executive Denis Egan explained that Hanlon had recorded the Lasix administrations in his medical registrar.
Egan revealed that the last recorded entry was 53 hours before the handicap hurdle on September 11, and that Hanlon was unable to explain what Egan described as "high levels" of Lasix found in her system, given the recommended withdrawal period for the anti-bleeding drug is 48 hours.
The Terence O'Brien-trained runner-up Mill Quest has been awarded the race.
Lasix is the recognised brand name for furosemide, which is permitted on raceday in America, where Irish and European runners frequently run on the medication. However, it is a banned substance on raceday in Ireland.
"Some horses show up clear within 42 hours, but others take up to 72 hours to show up clear. I gave the injection before the window and it just took my filly longer to show up clear," Hanlon said.
"It’s not a banned substance. When you see that I just got the minimum fine, that tells it’s own story."
