Gruelling conditions await at Haydock as track passes inspection
There was some early cheer on Saturday morning, with officials at Haydock able to give the green light for this afternoon's meeting ahead of schedule.
An inspection had been planned for 8am, but that was brought forward and the card was given the all-clear.
Conditions will be extremely testing, as clerk of the course Kirkland Tellwright said: "It was -1C overnight, and we had 4mm of rain so have had 60 odd millimetres of rain in a week. We have been as close to waterlogging and frost as we can possibly be without being off."
The going is described as heavy, with sleet this morning though that is forecast to clear for the afternoon.
There was not such good news for Sunday's card at Newcastle, with the meeting cancelled following an inspection.
Snow is covering the track, with further cold weather forecast.
