Greatrex pays tribute to 'great servant' and festival regular Paint The Clouds
Next month's St James's Place Foxhunter Hunters' Chase will be missing a familiar face after news emerged that festival stalwart Paint The Clouds has died.
A near founder member of Warren Greatrex's yard, he had run in the Cheltenham race for the last three years and finished third behind On The Fringe in 2015 and 2016.
He also won the Stratford Foxhunters' Champion Chase (formerly the Horse & Hound Cup) twice and gained his third straight victory in the hunter chase at Doncaster's late-February meeting last year at the age of 12.
"Unfortunately he sustained an injury at the end of last season," said Greatrex. "It deteriorated and unfortunately he had to be put down.
"He was brilliant for us and he was a stable favourite," Lambourn-based Greatrex recalled. "He was a great servant for Peter Deal and Jill and Robin Eynon.
"He was placed at a couple of Cheltenham festivals and was unlucky the year he finished fourth in the Bet365 Gold Cup as it rained on the day and that wasn't ideal."
Paint The Clouds, who won two bumpers before being sold out of the late Alan Swinbank's yard for 25,000gns in 2009, won 13 times over hurdles and fences and had career earnings of nearly £92,000.
