Greatrex keeps his cool as Ice Age lands £75,000 series finale
Eddy Greatrex got held up in traffic en route to Windsor's evening fixture but the apprentice had no such problems in the Sky Bet Windsor Sprint Series Finale Handicap as he steered Ice Age to victory in the £75,000 contest.
After riding at Lingfield earlier in the day, Greatrex missed his ride in the opening 6f novice stakes but arrived on time to partner the Eve Johnson Houghton-trained four-year-old, who dug deep in the closing stages to hold on for a valuable success.
Owned by Eden Racing III, Ice Age finished third in the inaugural running of the race last year and confirmed his liking for the course when winning the final series qualifier two weeks ago.
Quick out the gate, the 7-1 shot took up the lead a long way out and had enough in the tank to keep Upstaging at bay with Stake Acclaim, ridden in isolation hard against the stands' side rail, finishing third.
"He's an absolute angel, a pleasure to ride," said Greatrex on At The Races. "He loves these races when they go quick and maintain the gallop and it was a good effort. Eve and the team have been great to me, so thanks go to them."
