Gosden's Palace Pier storms home at Sandown - but bookies cool on Classic chance
Palace Pier built on the promise of his debut with a convincing victory for John Gosden in the novice stakes at Sandown on Wednesday.
The son of Kingman, who went off at 1-8, kicked on under Frankie Dettori in the closing stages to finish clear of the reopposing Mars Landing and 20-1 shot Southern Dancer.
Despite maintaining his unbeaten record, Palace Pier drifted from 16-1 to 20-1 with Paddy Power for the 2,000 Guineas next May.
Gosden said: "I brought him here to a novice because he's still very green. We've been rather restricted at home and have only been on the all-weather and Frankie said he was looking around at everything in front. He'll be a lot more worldly after that run.
"He'll have one more run this year. Quite where that will be I have no idea but probably something like the Horris Hill or France. The Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere would be a strong possibility."
In the following Listed Fortune Stakes, King Of Change – who had not been seen on a racecourse since finishing second to Magna Grecia in the 2,000 Guineas in May – returned with a smooth victory.
The three-year-old has a number of entries this autumn and could run in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot, for which he was cut to 12-1 from 20s with Paddy Power.
