Horserace Writers & Photographers Awards entries

Stand back Richard Johnson and Aidan O’Brien. This is our, deservedly brief, turn for a moment in the spotlight.

The race to find those who are best at writing about racing, or taking pictures of it, is under way.

Entries have been invited for the Horserace Writers & Photographers Awards, sponsored by the Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club, to be held at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on December 3.

Those fancying their chances as horserace writer of the year and reporter of the year, titles won by the likes of Tom Kerr and Lee Mottershead in recent years, must submit three pieces of work to hwpacontacts@gmail.com.

The articles, to be emailed in pdf form, must have been written between October 1, 2017 and October 7 this year.

Those same dates apply to entries for the picture of the year and photographer of the year, an award won seven times by the Racing Post’s Ed Whitaker, which must be posted to Will Hayler, 1 North Lane, York YO24 2NS.

Bookings for the lunch are now open, with tickets costing £99. Tables or individual placed can be reserved by email to hwpacontacts@gmail.com.

Merlin correction

The Queen's sprinter Merlin has not had his wind operated on contrary to a reference in Wednesday's newspaper edition.

The Michael Bell-trained four-year-old is set to make his return from a long absence in a 6f handicap at Ripon on Saturday.

Extra meeting

Horse Racing Ireland has announced that an additional Flat meeting will be held at Naas on Tuesday.

Entries for the meeting will close by 12 noon on Thursday, with declarations to run to be made by 10am on Monday.
