The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe was inaugurated in 1920 but was not held during the first two years of World War II, so Sunday's running is the 100th in the race's history.

The first running was won by a colt trained at Newmarket, Comrade, although that gave a misleading impression of the race's early international impact. Comrade was owned by a Frenchman and had won the Grand Prix de Paris.

Not for many years did the Arc become a regular target for the top British middle-distance horses, although it was won by another British colt (Parth in 1923) and by two raiders from Italy before World War II.
