Lurid morning headlines might have made for an uneasy start to Saturday for Oisin Murphy, but he was on top of the world – or at least the British Flat jockeys’ championship – by the end of it as he was crowned champion jockey for the third time.

The title pot briefly threatened to come to the boil as William Buick, who had pushed Murphy so close through the final week of the season, landed the second race on the card, the Champions Sprint, thanks to an ultra-confident ride on Creative Force to draw to within two winners of the title leader.

But from then on neither man threatened to add to their tally and Murphy’s success was confirmed by Buick’s failure to win the Champion Stakes, with the defending champion edging home by 153 winners to 151.
