British Stallion Studs EBF Glasgow Stakes (Listed) | 1m3f | 3yo+ | RUK

Hamilton Park this week celebrates the 70th anniversary of becoming the first track to host evening racing and the occasion is marked with the richest night in its calendar, featuring the £42,000 Listed Glasgow Stakes.

Back in 1947, the race was known as the Glasgow Plate and was won by 5-4 shot Culroy. Since making it's debut in Lanarkshire evening racing has become a fixture up and down Britain.

Vivien Currie, chief executive at Hamilton, said: "Evening racing forms an integral part of the modern racing calendar across the world and we're incredibly proud that it was a concept forged right here."

Seven are declared for the Listed contest that has thrown up winners such as Postponed and St Leger runner-up Ventura Storm in recent years. It looks another strong field with a potential shootout between two improving stayers in the Queen’s Call To Mind and the Roger Varian-trained Defoe.

Defoe is bidding to make it a hat-trick and follow in the footsteps of Postponed for Sheikh Mohammed Obaid. His trainer said: “The race has always been the plan since York and he’s a progressive type who deserves a step up in grade. The extra furlong at a stiff track will suit, as will any of the forecast rain.”

Call To Mind is clear on ratings after an impressive sixth behind Permian at Royal Ascot on only his third start. The form of the race looks strong with the fourth, Raheen House, winning at Group level at the July festival, and William Haggas will be hopeful of another step forwards.

Twin Star has his first start for Andrew Balding since making the move from Ireland to his Newbury base. He has recently been purchased by the Leicester City owners and they will be hoping for a quick reward.

Balding said: “It's obviously his first run for us but he's settled in very well and has been showing nicely. Things did not go his way at Ascot, but on his Irish form he has a chance of a place in what looks a strong race.”

Mark Johnston has a tremendous record in the race, winning five of the last ten runnings, and has two entered here in Frankuus and Monticello. Frankuus has won at Group 3 and Listed level, albeit in weaker races than this looks on paper.

Euro Nightmare is the only filly in the race and gets 5lb from the rest of the field, while the David Simcock-trained Fierce Impact is still lightly raced and has shown hints he could be up to a race like this.
