Four-time Melbourne Cup-winning owner Dato Tan Chin Nam dies aged 92
Dato Tan Chin Nam, the Malaysian-born entrepreneur, developer and racing investor who won the Melbourne Cup four times, has died aged 92.
Well known for racing horses with legendary trainer Bart Cummings for close to 40 years, Tan Chin Nam had enormous success in winning some of Australia’s greatest races. In addition to four Melbourne Cups he won the Cox Plate three times, the Caulfield Cup, Doncaster Mile and more, with his horses carrying the black and white checks, yellow sleeves, black and white check cap colours.
In Britain, Tan's most famous horse would be So You Think, who after a successful career in Australia won five Group 1s in Britain and Ireland for Aidan O'Brien in the silks of Derrick Smith for the Coolmore partners.
His other top performers included 1996 Melbourne Cup winner Saintly, Viewed (his final Melbourne Cup winner in 2008), Catalan Opening, Faint Perfume and dual Melbourne Cup winner Think Big.
Tan Chin Nam also owned Think Big Stud, located along the Wingecarribee River at Burradoo in New South Wales.
The Moonee Valley Racing Club stages the Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes in September as a major lead up race for the Cox Plate in his honour.
