Four stars who could light up Sandown in Coral-Eclipse
Entries were released on Wednesday for the one of the summer's top middle-distance Group 1 contests, the Coral-Eclipse. Here are some of the eyecatchers who could line up on July 8.
Minding 4-1
Aidan O'Brien is responsible for 19 of the 66 entries but the star among his hand is none other than outstanding filly Minding. The four-year-old made a winning reappearance at Naas earlier this month and boasts seven victories at the highest level to her name. Given the form she was in last year, it would be no surprise to see another Group 1 contest go her way.
Jack Hobbs 8-1
Dubai Sheema Classic winner Jack Hobbs shows no signs of slowing down at the age of five and having won the Irish Derby in 2015 over a mile and a half, is sure to stay the trip. In all his career starts to date, he has finished in the frame nine times with his only unplaced finish coming when pulled up behind Exospheric in the Jockey Club Stakes last April. Based on that record, he's sure to be in the mix again.
Barney Roy 8-1
Richard Hannon's colt impressed many when finishing second behind O'Brien's 2,000 Guineas winner Churchill earlier this month, suggesting that a step up in trip would suit. Connections have mooted the St James's Palace Stakes as his next target, where he could face Churchill again. The manner of his second-placed effort shows he improved from his Greenham Stakes victory and there would be no doubt to see him progress again.
Permian 40-1
Mark Johnston's charge was an impressive four-and-a-half-length winner of the Listed Newmarket Stakes earlier this month, over the 1m2f trip of the Coral-Eclipse. He showed improvement from having finished second behind Cracksman in last month's Investec Derby Trial and will face him again in the Dante Stakes on Thursday. He's not currently entered for the Derby but shows plenty of promise of being capable of stepping up to another level.
Coral-Eclipse
Coral: 4 Minding, 8 Highland Reel, Jack Hobbs, Ulysses, Barney Roy, 10 Churchill, Hawkbill, Mutakayyef, 12 Ribchester, Eminent, 14 Decorated Knight, So Mi Dar, Zarak, 16 Bar
