Four dark horses to note at Newmarket's July meeting
Newmarket's popular July meeting starts on Thursday and here are four names who might become a little more familiar after it.
Being beaten 14 lengths in a handicap may not be the best prep for a debut in Group company, but when Waldstern is trained by John Gosden and ridden by Frankie Dettori it might not be such a negative. Hope is also supplied with the gelding's effort in last year's Listed Zetland Stakes, when he was just two and a half lengths off Irish Derby third Norway. No-one has won this race more times than Gosden and who is riding better than Dettori?
Hurstwood was the outsider of three when he struck at Pontefract last time, but there did not seem to be much of a fluke about the performance and the two-year-old has progressed with each run to earn a shot at this Group 2. His owner David Armstrong enjoyed a memorable day when Mayson won the July Cup in 2012 and he will be hoping this improving type can also register a significant success at the course.
William Haggas probably does not get to use Ryan Moore as much he would like, but the rider's name appears alongside Destination in a race that could take some solving. By Haggas's admirable Eclipse winner Mukhadram, Destination is lightly raced after just four starts and has been beaten favourite on his last two outings, but that could mean some mileage in his mark, while there are not many hotter yards at the moment.
Only Mark Johnston has saddled more two-year-old winners this year than Archie Watson, who continues to excel with his juveniles. He has little trouble readying them to win first time out and that was the case with Shared Belief, a Dandy Man colt who did well to score on his debut at Sandown last month. Entered in the Group 1 National Stakes, this leggy, athletic individual should have more to offer.
