Former royal trainer in hospital after puncturing lung in fall

Former trainer Ian Balding is recovering in a high-dependency unit in Basingstoke Hospital following a riding accident earlier in the week.

Balding, 78, who is best known for his exploits with the brilliant Mill Reef and his many training achievements for the Queen, broke 14 ribs as well as puncturing a lung when parting company with his horse. He is expected to remain in hospital for at least a week.

His son Andrew, who took over the licence from him at Park House Stables in 2003, reported on Friday: "Dad is in a lot of pain, but fortunately there are no head injuries.
