As split-second decisions go, James Doyle's to go down the spurned far-side rail on Secret Advisor was one of the better ones as the pair got up late to land the Melrose Handicap from Bin Battuta.

Doyle admitted afterwards that he felt that part of the track was not the quickest, but with options running out and his mount a long way back he pulled him to the left and the rest was deeply impressive.

The winner already has Group-placed form to his name after finishing third to Stradivarius in the Queen's Vase, but there will be no rush to add to that, according to trainer Charlie Appleby's assistant Alex Merriam.
