Four who made the Cup their own

Le Moss (1979 and ‘80)
Having won the Queen’s Vase and March Stakes as a three-year-old, the Carlo d’Alessio-owned, Henry Cecil-trained Le Moss completed a clean sweep of the top staying races the following year, flooring stablemate Buckskin in the Ascot Gold Cup under Geoff Baxter before taking the Goodwood Cup and moving on to triumph at Doncaster.

The son of Le Levanstell, described by regular partner Joe Mercer as a “cantankerous bugger”, suffered an injury that kept him off the track until the following June, when he landed an all-the-way success at Ascot from Ardross, going on to defeat the same rival at Goodwood at odds of 4-7.

The treble-treble was completed at Donny, where he again got the better of Ardross, leading from the start to score by a neck.
