Doncaster tops 60,000 over four days

The St Leger meeting at Doncaster could not match last year's record level but hit its "benchmark" total of 60,000 over the four days of the festival for the fourth year in a row.

After gentlemen's day broke Friday's attendance record with 12,038, the morning rain was blamed for hitting the St Leger day crowd, which at 26,577 was the lowest since 2011 and more than 3,800 down on last year.

Susannah Gill, Arena Racing Company's director of external affairs, said: "The rain from 10am until after 12.30pm came at just the wrong time for those who hadn't pre-booked but were thinking about coming racing.
