Royal Ascot Day 5 Races

The final day of Royal Ascot is a bumper eight-race card, with five Group races including a staggering three Group 1 races. The Silver Wokingham Handicap kicks off proceedings, added to facilitate the increase in Royal Ascot entries this year. However, all eyes will be on the St James's Palace Stakes to see whether Pinatubo can reverse the placings with Wichita after finishing third in the 2,000 Guineas.

The Silver Wokingham Stakes Handicap –

• Progressive at three, winning 6f handicaps at Nottingham (soft) and Leicester (good to soft); second over C&D in October has been well advertised by the winner since (front two clear); made a very encouraging return to action at Newmarket two weeks ago when 5f on fast ground would have been plenty sharp enough; still has some potential and warrants respect.

Queen Mary Stakes –

• Made virtually all when scoring by 5l from wide draw at Lingfield (5f, AW); third did nothing for the form at Chelmsford this week but hard not to be impressed by the manner of that victory and William Buick is 3-12 (+£10.50) when riding for Mark Johnston at this meeting.

Coventry Stakes –

• Night Of Thunder colt who cost 110,000gns the second time he was sold; impressive at Newbury (6f, good) last week, always up there and striding clear inside the final 1f despite veering left momentarily as the turbo kicked in; third franked the form when scoring at Goodwood on Monday; respected.

Coronation Stakes –

• Good efforts when in the frame in Group/Listed races last season but looked an improved filly when blitzing rivals from the front upped to 1m2f at Newmarket recently, having the race won a long way out and very much shaping as if the return to 1m would be fine; rider will need to judge the fractions right but big chance from rails draw if he can.

St James's Palace Stakes –

• Looked a top prospect when running away with a 7f Group 3 at Newmarket in September and perhaps the soft ground was unsuitable when third to Pinatubo in the Dewhurst next time; career-best form when close second in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket on recent return and big chance on that fine run.

Diamond Jubilee –

• A fairytale story having been bought (unraced from Godolphin) for just £2,800 last August and shown such rapid progress that he's now a leading contender for this Group 1; completed a hat-trick at Dundalk (AW maiden/handicaps over 5f/6f) then quickened clear in Listed event at Naas (5.5f, good to firm) on turf debut; record is now 4-5; has been winning his races easily and looks very talented; sequence could well be extended.

Wokingham Stakes –

• Won over 7f in Ireland but has been making his name at 6f in Britain, winning on Fibresand in March and then striding clear at Newmarket recently (good to firm); up 6lb in a race that will take more winning but no ifs and buts about wellbeing and there's a good chance he has more to come.

Queen Alexandra Stakes –

• Admirably tough and reliable dual-purpose performer who was a Grade 2 novice chase winner in February but better judged on last season's Flat form, when his good efforts in top turf/AW handicaps included winning the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle; stays 2m4f well on the Flat; good chance.

Royal Ascot Day 4 Results

Day four at Royal Ascot included some of the most impressive performances of the week and some of the widest-margin wins.

Arguably, the best performance came from Art Power for Tim Easterby, who was a class above in the opener, winning by three and a half lengths, while Dandalla took the Albany by six lengths for Karl Burke. All eyes were on the feature Commonwealth Cup, however, in which Clive Cox's Golden Horde got the better of Kimari, who fluffed the start. See the full results below:
