The common theme linking the two great sprints staged on Royal Ascot's final afternoon was they were about the one that got away, in Lazzat's case literally, in More Thunder's case metaphorically and, for his connections and the many punters who backed him, painfully.

In a brazen attempt to milk the moment, Lazzat unshipped James Doyle following the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes. Given his mount had just won a £1 million Group 1 showpiece, Doyle understandably directed no criticism towards Wathnan Racing's fifth winner of the meeting. Tom Marquand also had only words of praise for More Thunder after their agonising Wokingham Stakes defeat but seldom can a jockey have looked more deflated while walking back to Ascot's weighing room.

Doyle, on the other hand, has appeared to be smiling all week, as have all those associated with Wathnan, an operation whose royal meeting performance in the three years since its creation is little short of astonishing.
