Economics' 'great potential' to be tested as William Haggas hands star colt double Champion Stakes challenge
Economics will this autumn attempt something very few have managed, with William Haggas keen to take on the Royal Bahrain Irish Champion StakesQipco Champion Stakes double with a colt he described yesterday as having “great potential”.
In the 48 years since the inception of the Irish Champion Stakes in 1976 just six horses – Triptych (1987), Indian Skimmer (1988), Pilsudski (1997), New Approach (2008), Almanzor (2016) and Magical (2019) – have won both races in the same year.
All of those six were previous Group 1 winners but, although Economics has yet to run in a top-flight contest, such is the promise he has shown in just four starts he is the 6-4 favourite for his Group 1 bow at Leopardstown on September 14 and 3-1 for the Ascot prize next month.
