Track specialist Baraweez heads three-strong Ellison team

Baraweez, twice a winner at the Galway festival and placed in this lucrative race for the last two years, heads the weights and leads a three-strong challenge by trainer Brian Ellison in a race being run under new sponsorship this year.

First run in 1971 and formerly known as the McDonogh Handicap and subsequently the Tote Mile and the Topaz Mile, the race has been won by only one British-trained raider – the Charlie Nelson-trained Majestic Nurse, who scored under Christy Roche in 1979.
