I Am Maximus 'perhaps the best National winner of them all' says BHA handicapper - and there's 'every chance' he can emulate Red Rum

I Am Maximus produced one of the best performances in the Grand National in modern times when claiming his second victory in the race, with former winners of the Aintree spectacular in no doubt he can land a third edition next year.

Martin Greenwood, the BHA senior handicapper responsible for assessing the Grand National, said he had “pencilled in” a rating of 173 for I Am Maximus after his victory at Aintree on Saturday off an official rating of 168, with the new mark 1lb superior to any achieved by dual winner Tiger Roll.

Such was the manner of I Am Maximus’s victory, Grand National-winning trainer Donald McCain, whose father, Ginger, trained the race’s only three-time winner Red Rum, said there was “every chance” of that record being matched in a year’s time.
