Beyond the lineage of great Grand National winners, there is plethora of well-known names who never tasted success in the race. The agony and anguish these jockeys felt in defeat gives us as much an insight into the importance and prestige of the National as the stories of the winners.


Chris Grant

Now a trainer, Chris Grant had twice been a National runner-up heading into the race in 1990, and he was more confident than ever before. The performance of 66-1 shot Young Driver in 1986 behind West Tip surprised many, while Durham Edition was a gallant four lengths behind Rhyme N Reason just two years later.
