Limato given green light for Lennox Stakes by Candy

Limato will run in Tuesday's Lennox Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, trainer Henry Candy has confirmed.

Candy and owner Paul Jacobs walked the course at midday to determine whether the going would be suitable for Limato, who they feel is at his most effective on fast ground.

The going at Goodwood is officially good, good to soft in places, but having walked the straight to the three-furlong marker Candy declared himself happy and issued the thumbs-up.

He said: "The ground is only just on the slow side of good and the way the year's going it could be the best ground we find for a long time."

Candy added: "It won't be totally ideal for him but I think he'll cope with it. He's got every chance on the form book."

Jacobs, who left his suede shoes on to get a better idea of how much moisture was in the grass, said he was pleasantly surprised by how much the course had dried out.

"We've done this [walking the course before racing] three times now – before the Park Stakes at Doncaster and we got that right, and before the Lockinge and we got it wrong, so let's hope we get it right again this time," he said.

"We didn't need to leave the car park before the Sprint Cup at Haydock [to know the ground was too soft] and the ground at Newmarket wasn't quite the same this year as it was last. Hopefully today will be okay.

"When he can bounce off it he's a different horse and there's a lot of grass. If the forecast is correct we wouldn't have a chance of running if the race was tomorrow, but we're here and this is okay so we'll give it a go."

Limato is the general 3-1 favourite for the Group 2 Lennox Stakes, which is due off at 3.00.
