From Chief Singer to Arabian Queen: Jeff Smith's turf superstars
Chief Singer: Smith's first top performer started in an auspicious way by winning the Coventry first time out. Under Ron Sheather's tutelage he developed into an outstanding sprinter and miler, chasing home El Gran Senor in the 2,000 Guineas before landing the St James's Palace, July Cup and Sussex Stakes.
Dashing Blade: A brilliant two-year-old who twice struck at Group 1 level in his first season, landing the National Stakes and Dewhurst Stakes. His career also ended in Group 1 glory, this time achieved in Italy.
Lochsong: Described by her owner-breeder as "a fairytale". Given she had "shocking joints", early aspirations were not great. Yet after winning the Stewards' Cup she continued to show breathtaking speed, collecting eight Group races, three of them top-level. The first of those came in the Nunthorpe. "She blew them away inside the first furlong," said Smith. "I've never been so shocked, or pleasantly surprised."
