For Jeff Smith, this was a rather splendid way to mark an important anniversary.

No less than 40 years have passed since he first entered racing courtesy of a horse called Rush Bond, who enjoyed his finest hour when winning the seller for so long a part of York's Ebor meeting. That particular meeting has continued to treat him kindly. So has Glorious Goodwood, not least through the Qatar Stewards' Cup.

It was back in 1992 that future triple-Group 1 winner Lochsong, bred at Smith's Littleton Stud in Hampshire, won the famous dash under Willie Carson.
