Mosse well drawn on Global Academy for first ride at track

The draw will always be a big factor in any 5f race at Chester, and in this particular handicap eight of the last ten winners have been berthed in stall four or lower (1343427347).

Those figures confirm a significant bias, but there is one significant difference in the race’s make-up this time. This year’s Boodles Diamond Handicap is restricted to three-year-olds, and it’s quite possible one or two of the less-experienced members of the field will not have quite the electric pace out of the gates that is customary with older sprinters, giving wider-drawn runners who break well a better chance.

Mosse breaks new ground

Gerald Mosse has travelled the world and ridden on all manner of tracks, but this will be his first time at Chester.

He will be ready for it though, and he has a live chance of a winner at the first attempt when partnering the well-drawn Global Academy for Gay Kelleway.

The trainer said on Tuesday: "Gerald has never ridden at Chester but it’s a bit like riding in America and he knows he’s got to be kicking on.

“He’s a world-class rider and wants to prove himself here. He’s a thinking jockey and he studies and studies. He’s very dedicated and was up at five o’clock this morning to ride work here.

“Global Academy has a good gate [two] and should be seen to good effect on the course, so long as we don’t have rain.

“He’s good around the turning all-weather tracks and the sharper the better for him – he was all over the winner at Sandown last time, but the track was too stiff and the ground was too soft and he got collared. If they get in front of him they’re going too fast.”

His run at Sandown was solid and he’s got a nice draw in three. He’s got top weight but is improving with his racing.

She’s improved a ton for her run at Bath and the handicapper has given her a chance. She’s got a great draw and, although a shower of rain would help, it should be lovely ground. Ours are in form and I’m very hopeful of a big run.

Tom Dascombe, trainer of Big Time Maybe, Formidable Kitt and Porchy Party
Big Time Maybe hasn’t got the best of draws and his form on turf doesn’t seem as good as it is on the all-weather. He’s in good shape and I’m hoping he can run close. Formidable Kitt has lost her way a bit, but it was Listed and Group races all the way after her win. This is a drop in class and she might be well handicapped, so she should run well. Porchy Party is a course and distance winner but has a hopeless draw.

He has a rubbish draw and it’s probably a waste of time, but at least the owner can have a day out.

She ran flat last time, so we’ve taken the hood off as she was maybe too relaxed. She’s not totally come in her coat yet, but she’s getting there and seems in good form at home.
